The growing popularity of bullfighting, together with the desire to provide Almería with a worthy venue, led to the construction of a proper bullring that reflected the importance this tradition held — and still holds — in the city.
Construction: 1887–1888
Work began in 1887 and progressed quickly thanks to the support of local entrepreneurs and the enthusiasm of the people of Almería. The bullring was inaugurated on 26 August 1888, coinciding with the Feria de la Virgen del Mar, and since then it has hosted some of the most memorable moments in Andalusian bullfighting history.
A century of stories
Over the decades, the bullring has witnessed countless celebrations, renovations, cultural events and unforgettable afternoons. Its continuous presence has made it a fundamental part of the city’s collective memory.
Architecture and Layout: an Amphitheatre for Emotion A monumental design

The Virgen del Mar Fair and Bullfighting Season
Every August, in the second half of the month, Almería celebrates its Feria in honour of the Virgen del Mar — a festival that blends tradition, devotion and a lively atmosphere that fills the city centre.
The fair officially opens with the pregón, a ceremonial proclamation, followed by several days of celebrations. Each morning the Feria de Mediodía takes over the streets with cultural events, live music and a wide range of gastronomy, running approximately from 12:30 pm to 5:30 pm.
In the afternoon, from 6:00 pm onwards, the focus shifts to the Almería Bullring, where the traditional bullfights take place — undoubtedly one of the most iconic events of the fair.
At night, the city experiences one of its most emotional moments: the Floral Offering to the Virgen del Mar, during which thousands of people honour Almería’s patron saint. The day often concludes with light shows and fireworks, adding a festive finale to each day of celebration.

The Almería Bullring offers a range of seating options designed for all kinds of spectators. Each area provides a distinct way to experience the event — from the intensity of being right next to the arena to broad panoramic views from higher levels.
Barrera (Rows 1 & 2)
These are the seats closest to the arena, making the barrera the most intense and thrilling way to watch a bullfight.
Almería has two rows of barrera, ideal for aficionados who want to feel every moment up close.
Their proximity also means greater exposure, so they are generally chosen by experienced fans.
Tendido – Rows 1 to 11
The tendido is the largest area of the bullring and hosts the majority of spectators.
- Row 1 (front row of the tendido): Highly valued for having no one in front, direct visibility and more legroom.
- Row 11 (top row of the tendido): Popular for its comfort, as it includes backrests and provides an elevated viewpoint without being too far from the action.
Front Row of the Grandstand (Delantera de Grada)
Located on the first elevated level, just behind the railing.
